The brook trout is Minnesota's only native stream trout. It is found in Lake Superior and many North Shore streams as well as small creeks in southeastern Minnesota and occasionally in other parts of the state (MN DNR, 2000). Though it generally does not reach a large size, it is, never the less, a popular sport fish in Minnesota. The state record for brook trout is 6 pounds, 5 ounces. However, those in streams rarely exceed one pound (MN DNR, 2000).

The rainbow trout. though frequently stocked in Minnesota waters, is native to the Pacific Northwest, and the brown trout, also now found in many Minnesota streams, is originally from Europe. The cutthroat trout, native to the western states, is not found in Minnesota.
