Though any of the species listed in this question might be found in a Minnesota trout stream (I have caught all four in the creek that runs through my backyard), the mottled sculpin, pictured above, is the "muddler minnow." At home in fast riffles of clean, cold-water streams, this small, bottom-oriented fish rarely exceeds four inches in length (Ohio DNR, 2000 and Skehan, 1998-2000).
