David Vestal's Review of the 2005 Calendar
Deans 2005 b/w photo calendar, and more James R. Dean has done it again. His new calendar is on the same high and personal level of perception that Ive come to expect from him. The cover (and April) photo is a much-tilted shot, presumably from a moving car, showing a little airplane skimming along above the roadside telephone poles. I have a hunch its a model airplane*, but who cares? Its an antic and charming picture without pretensions, and its big black v-shaped lower half is as important as the planemaybe even more important. But importance is not important in his pictures. Observant may be the word for them. He sees things wryly and with pleasure, and the pleasure comes across consistently. I think the photos are likely to grow on youthat youll like them more as you see them more, each one for every day of its month.
