This party took place at Toshi's father's temple. He is a Buddhist monk and they live at the temple. That is to say, their house is attached to the temple. It was a cold December night and as you can see, I'm sitting next to the heater because I was cold. In Japan, they don't have central heating. Instead, they have a kerosene heater in each room. They only heat the rooms they use. Therefore, the rooms are all closed off from each other and the hallways and bathrooms are not heated. I think that helps make the Japanese people more hardy. You can also see, that Larry and I don't sit on the floor as easily as the rest of the group. They are kind and usually try to find us chairs to sit in. We can do it when we have to, but it's not easy. |
