Jan took Teaching English as a Second Language courses at St. Cloud State University and in December, 2003 earned a graduate certificate in that field. She learned about an opportunity to teach Engish as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Akita University in Akita, Japan.

Jan applied for that job, was accepted and taught at Akita University from April, 2003 until April, 2005. We lived in Akita during those two years.
