Electronic Resumes

The resume section is basic advice on tailoring your resume for the world of electronic communication. It is not a how-to-write-your-resume page.

Employers and agencies generally use three formats:

Word Resumes

Scanned Resumes

A fourth option I recommend is:

Ask the agency or company if you can send a PDF rather than a Word doc. It can save pagination hassles!

Tips

The most important thing about transmitting your resume online is to make sure it is in the correct format. If they can't read it, they are not going to call.

One more important note:

  • Don't name your resume file resume.doc!
Employers and agencies have to deal with numerous files and the name problem can get to be a hassle. The standard convention is to use your first initial, last name and the file extension. IE: ajones.doc
