All About Reflexology

    Definition of reflexology:

"Reflexology is a science that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body. Reflexology is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers on these reflex areas (Byers 11)."

Reflexology can relieve stress, improve circulation, and help the body stay in balance.

As far back as 2500 BC reflexology is known to have been used. Pictographs found on the physician, Ankhmahor's, tomb in Egypt show the use of foot reflexology (Rogers 11). This ancient therapy brings the body back into balance and helps to prevent further imbalance due to daily activities causing us to have illness, pain or fatigue (Berkson 1). Pressure applied to all areas of the feet with emphasis on tender areas stimulate wellness. Pressure along with relaxation strokes promote a sense of well being. When continuous steady pressure is applied an anesthetic effect is achieved, but for reflexology a pulsing pressure done in continuous forward motion and covering all the top, bottom and side areas of the feet constitutes a complete treatment (Nummela).

Some reflexologists believe that reflexology works because of the veins and nerves that travel all over the human body. Others believe in the Eastern view where the body has paths of energy (chi') and think that reflexology works through these pathways. Dr. Randolph Stone thinks that there are negative and positive poles in the body. Stone's, "polarity therapy" uses reflex points all over the body (Issel 113).

    Examples of reflexology use

Insomnia - An inability to fall into a relaxing sleep can be helped by working areas in the big toe. Specifically along the edges, in the center and along the base. The pituitary gland reflex is found in the center, bottom of the big toes and hooking in with a corner of your thumb stimulates this gland (Ingham 44). It is also in line with the pineal gland. When the pineal gland releases melatonin this is the off switch. Light stimulates the pituitary gland or "on switch" for the body whereas darkness causes the pineal to release melatonin, shutting the body down. Reflexology can elicit relaxation of the neck, increasing blood circulation to the brain, allowing the pituitary gland to relax and that in turn allows the body to relax (Nummela).

Multiple Sclerosis-It has been indicated by research that MS affects people who have weak immune systems. The best parts of the feet to stimulate with reflexology for this condition are the inside side of the foot from the toe to the heel, the area right below the ball of the foot, the big toe, and the ankle. These areas cover the spinal, solar plexus, brain, and lymph reflexes. There are documented cases of people completly recovering from MS (Carter 247).

Heart Conditions-The heart reflex corresponds with the ball of the left foot. The entire foot should be massaged, but this area should recieve specisl attention (Byers 96).
